Protecting adjacent teeth from iatrogenic damage during cavity preparations is important, but various investigations have indicated that this task is not being done on a routine basis. This means that numerous intact teeth and/or restorations are being inadvertently scarred, mainly by rotary instruments.
That's where an interproximal shield can be invaluable. Properly placed, one of these products can protect teeth and restorations and, at the same time, allows you to perform with less stress. While simple matrix bands can also be used for this task, the dedicated items offer benefits described in each product's commentary.
