Closed bite impression trays have many advocates due to their utility of not only registering the impression of the treatment site, but also of the opposing arch and bite all at the same time. While the original trays were made of plastic, the more current versions use metal for more rigidity. In addition, there are sideless trays for use with rigid impression materials or trays with sides to help retain the impression material. Most of these trays are designed to be disposable, although one version uses a reusable frame and disposable inserts.
Note: Even though some of these trays are large enough to use for multi-unit restorations, we believe they should be restricted to impressions for 1-2 restorations.
