Cord Packers

Packing cord is still the most widely used technique for retracting gingiva during a myriad of restorative procedures. While most attention has been centered on the cord itself, hemostatic agents, and even dispensers, packing instruments have largely been taken for granted. However, the instrument you choose to use for packing cord can greatly influence the ease in which the procedure can be accomplished and whether the tissue is traumatized or not.

Cord packers vary greatly in their design, including those with and without serrated ends, wide or narrow ends, thin or thick ends, offset or straight angles, even round or straight ends. Most are double-ended, with the blade on one end being parallel with the handle and the blade on the other end being at a right angle. Flipping an instrument from one end to the other is pretty well ingrained in most clinicians, so once you settle on an instrument that fits your needs, there is rarely a reason to change.
