Carvers

One of the great advantages of light-cured materials is unlimited working time. This gives us the opportunity to properly contour a direct resin restoration or remove excess resin cement from an indirect resin-bonded restoration before curing and thus minimize time-consuming finishing procedures. However, there will always be the need to do some finishing of a bonded restoration after it is cured. The majority of our finishing instruments are rotary (burs, diamonds, and discs) or in the form of interproximal strips. But some areas need the added control of a hand instrument.

Composite carvers can basically be divided into two categories: disposable and reusable:

Disposable

These are typically scalpel blades on a reusable handle or the entire blade and handle can be disposed.

Reusable

Rigid carver or knife. They are useful for fine finishing and controlled shaping of embrasures. They are also very helpful when removing cured resin cement from indirect bonded restorations. But don't expect most of these instruments to actually carve anatomy into cured composite, which is much too hard for the majority of carvers to penetrate.

There was concern from several evaluators that these instruments can cause damage to restorations. Due to the lack of research in this area, we urge caution when using these instruments.
